Sophrology

Sophrology: The Science of Harmony in Consciousness

Sophrology is a psychocorporal discipline developed in the 1960s by Spanish neuropsychiatrist Dr. Alfonso Caycedo. The term itself originates from the Greek words:- "sos" (harmony), - "phren" (mind),-  and "logos" (study or science), translating to "the science of the harmony in consciousness." Inspired by a fusion of Western psychiatry (such as hypnosis and progressive relaxation) and Eastern practices (yoga, Buddhist meditation, and Zen), sophrology was initially created to support war veterans suffering from PTSD and depression.

Today, it is much recognized as a gentle, holistic approach to improving mental and physical well-being, accessible to everyone.

  1. Core Principles and Objectives

Sophrology aims to harmonize the body and mind, fostering a state of balance, self-awareness, and inner peace. Its primary objectives include:

·        Strengthening the mind-body connection through breathing, movement, and mental visualization.

·        Expanding consciousness to better understand emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations.

·        Managing stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders, as well as preparing for challenging events (e.g., exams, medical procedures, childbirth, or athletic competitions).

·        Cultivating a positive mindset by focusing on the present moment and building confidence.

Sophrology is not just a relaxation technique—it is an womderful empowering toolkit for modern life, designed to help individuals manage energy levels, build resilience, and perform at their best. 😊

  1. How Sophrology Works ?

Sophrology is practiced through simple, accessible exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime. These exercises combine breathing techniques, dynamic relaxation, positive visualisation, body scan, mindfulness and meditation.

Let´s see more about each of these tools :

·        Breathing techniques (e.g., abdominal or synchronized breathing). With a many, from short to longer, exercises, it helps to promote relaxation and focus. The sophrologist offers you suitable exercises, to practice in you daily anytime and anywhere.

·        Dynamic relaxation (gentle movements paired with breathwork) will allow you to release tension slowly and at your own pace.

·        Positive visualization (imagining calming or successful scenarios) offers gentle and special moment to reduce anxiety and reinforce confidence.

·        Body scans combined with other exercises will allow you to heighten awareness of physical sensations and release stress.

·        Mindfulness and meditation to anchor the mind in the present.

  1. What happens during a session ?

A typical session lasts 45 ( for kids) – 60 minutes and can be tailored to individual or group settings, often guided by a trained sophrologist.

A sophrology session is divided into three parts: it always begins with a discussion with the sophrologist, followed by exercises, starting with dynamic relaxation exercises, which are gentle movements combined with breathing. These are followed by a guided visualization led by the sophrologist's voice. The session concludes with another discussion, a time to express the feelings experienced during the exercises.

  1. Scientific Validation

Sophrology’s effectiveness is supported by growing scientific research. About anxiety, drepression, hearing problems, the challenges and discomforts associated with menopause, attention and concentration deficit, sleep disorders… the scope of sophrology is vast, aiming to improve comfort and offer support and enhance quality of life.

Below are key studies and findings:

Mind-Body Interventions & Mental Health

·        Anxiety & Depression: A 2020 randomized controlled trial at the University of Barcelona found that 12 sophrology sessions over 4 weeks significantly reduced depression and improved anxiety management in participants (study details).

·        Chronic Pain: Mind-body interventions, including sophrology, have been shown to improve emotional well-being in chronic pain patients (Grunberg et al., 2021).

·        Sleep Disorders: Relaxation techniques like sophrology are widely used to combat insomnia (Bertisch et al., 2012).

·        Immune Response: Mind-body therapies, including meditation and visualization, reduce inflammation markers and influence immune responses (Morgan et al., 2014).

Specialized Applications

·        Tinnitus: A 2020 study at Georges-Pompidou Hospital (Paris) reported that 6–8 sophrology sessions reduced the intrusiveness of tinnitus in 140 patients.

·        Fibromyalgia: A 2018 Brazilian study demonstrated pain reduction in fibromyalgia patients through sophrology.

·        Asthma in Children: Research from Montpellier University Hospital (2018) showed improved breathing and oxygenation in children practicing sophrology alongside standard treatment.

·        Cancer Support: Sophrology is used in onco-hematology departments (e.g., Aix-Marseille University) to help patients cope with treatment side effects.

Ongoing Research

·        Alzheimer’s Caregivers: The Agency for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is conducting a 3-year study (2023–2026) to measure sophrology’s impact on caregivers, led by researchers from Université Paris VIII and Université de Nantes.

·        ASICS Movement for Mind: A randomized controlled trial (2021) by King’s College London found that 8 weeks of mindful movement (including sophrology) improved mental well-being and reduced stress in 200 participants. The program is now expanding for larger-scale testing.
